What a clinic website must show

A clinic website must answer the questions a patient has before they will call: who will I see, are they qualified, do you help with this, what does it cost, how do I book, and where and when. This guide is drawn from the Psychological Help Centre's site in Karachi, which we built, and it is about the website only.

People come to a clinic's website at an anxious moment, often late at night, often on a phone, sometimes for someone they love. They are not browsing. They want to know whether this is the right place, and how to take the next step without having to explain everything to a stranger first.

A good clinic website answers that before it says anything about itself.

Who will I see?

Name every practitioner, with their role and their qualification, and give each one a page of their own. Many patients, and parents especially, choose a person before they choose a practice.

The Psychological Help Centre names every one of its psychologists and states the standard they all meet on its home page: a postgraduate clinical qualification and over 800 supervised clinical hours.

Do you help with this?

Most people do not arrive with a diagnosis. They arrive with "I cannot sleep" or "my son will not go to school". Write a page for each condition you treat, in the words patients use, and give people who cannot name it a way in.

The Psychological Help Centre has a page for each condition it works with, grouped by what people notice first, and a line for everyone else: "Not sure what to call it? Tell us what is going on."

What does it cost, and how does booking work?

Put fees and the booking process on a page of their own, before the first call. Not everyone is ready to ring a stranger just to ask the price.

Then make the next step one tap: call, WhatsApp and booking at the top of every page, built for a phone first.

Where, and when?

Every clinic with its address and opening hours, and a plain line on whether sessions also run online. If you have more than one location, give each its own page.

What if it is urgent?

Some visitors are not safe right now. A clinic's site should say clearly what to do in an emergency, on every page, and should never leave that person waiting for a reply to a form.

What to leave off

Leave off anything a patient cannot check: promised outcomes, before-and-after stories, testimonials that could identify someone. Say what you do and who does it, plainly, and let the qualifications speak.

How long it takes

The Psychological Help Centre's site is a website, launched in 6 days. You can see what we build for practices like it on our healthcare websites page, and the other things every business site needs in our checklist from five live builds.
